Winter Shooting – What to Bring

For winter shooting I try to wear mid-weight gloves that allow some dexterity.  There is a fair amount of tinkering involved in setting up the tripod, leveling it and installing the camera.  I typically wear a light backpack containing an extra pair of heavy gloves, along with extra memory, a spare (charged) battery, tripod wrenches, and a chemical heat packet.  Sometimes after a setup and shoot, I realize that my hands are quite cold and the heavy gloves save the day.

More equipment for warmth than for shooting!

Often it is necessary to shed the gloves to manipulate the camera controls, menus, etc.  This tripod sling-caddy stays on my tripod for handy deployment and keeps me from fumbling things into the snow.  If it is snowing while shooting, I always bring a small towel in my jacket pocket for wiping the lens off immediately before shooting.  Especially with wide angle lenses, a snowflake on the lens filter can cause out-of-focus spots.

Exposed metal surfaces, knobs, and even the carbon fiber parts will get as cold as the environment.
